Home For The Holidays

Luke 2b.jpg

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria) And everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. he went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be marred to him and was expecting a child. Luke 2:1-5

The days leading up to Christmas are some of the busiest travel days of the year. Soon the roads will be filled with people heading home for the holidays. We will load up our cars and make the journey, knowing that home waits at the other end. What sights and sounds say “home to you?” For many of us, Christmas is Mama’s homemade cookies. It is listening to Dad’s story about the time he was a boy, or the big snowstorm of days gone by. We go home for the holidays because where we come from is part of who we are.

The days leading up to the birth of Christ found Joseph and Mary traveling home to Bethlehem. All the people had to return to their hometown for a census, which was just in time for Jesus’ birth. Where Joseph came from and, ultimately, where Jesus came from mattered in the grand plan of God. Jesus’ home was the fulfillment of prophecies that foretold that the Messiah would be from the house of David and that He would be born in Bethlehem. Joseph’s return home was a perfectly orchestrated part of God’s plan.

Home is different things for different people. Perhaps you don’t have those fond memories of smoked turkey and handmade gifts. But where you come from still matters, friend, because you come from the very heart of God. God dreamed up every detail of you before you were born, and He is working your origins, your past, present, and future, together as part of His grand plan. And if Christ is your Savior, your future includes a journey to a new, eternal home in heaven. We can spend this holiday looking heavenward in our hearts, knowing one day we will all truly be home for the holidays.

Grace and Peace to You My Friends
