Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings. For you, God have heard my vows, you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name. Psalm 61:1-5 (NIV)
When emotional injuries that were buried long ago come to the surface of life, they transform from past scares to raw, gaping wounds, brand new and scorching. Earthly bandages cannot completely heal the pain. We need God’s touch, the balm of his tenderness, upon us. It aches, but he is a safe hiding place, a refuge when we are afraid to walk through the pain.
Abiding in his safety and leaving the wound open is the hardest part. We have to see it, feel it, and let God walk us through the healing process. And that might take time. But he is a loving worthy, compassionate Father, whose treatment roots out all infection and disease so that the scars can remain healed. We are safe when we are in his care, and he promises to protect us.
Prayer: Lord, I bring you all of my hurt, pain, regret, and brokenness so you can heal me and put me back together, I take refuge in your loving arms today. Amen
