You Are The Light

Matthew 5a.pngYou are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? it is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.                                                                                          Matthew 5:13-16

When we set an example by the good deeds we do, people notice. “Good” in the Christian sense of the word, mustn’t be good only, but also attractive. The tragedy of so many Christian examples is that they have an element of coldness and harshness, without a trace of love. There is goodness that attracts, and goodness that alienates. A Christian’s life should make Christianity something special and appealing.

Our exemplary lives and good deeds must not draw attention to ourselves, but to God. Otherwise we are guilty of the-atrial exploits. At a conferenced that Dwight L. Moody attended, there was a group of young people who held a prayer session that lasted all night. The next morning they came across Moody and told him, “Mr. Moody6, just look how our faces are glowing!” Moody answered quietly, “Moses didn’t know that his face glowed.” When a person consciously draw attention to themselves. they ate not setting a Christian example.

Christians never think about what they do, but about what God enabled them to do. They never focus people’s attention on themselves, but point them in God’s direction.

Are You Listening!

1 Samuel 3.pngThe boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions. One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, Here I am. And he ran to Eli and said Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call, go back and lie down.” So he went back and lay down/ Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” My son, Eli said, I did not called; go back and lie down.” Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord. The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he called you, say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”                                          ( I Samuel 3:1-10)

Samuel said to the Lord, speak for your servant is listening. How often as Christians do we say these words to the Lord, Lord we are listening, and at times we are not truly listening at all, our minds are in too many other places. Perhaps the reason is that we have over commit ourselves in our lives. As adults when we begin to work, we go out with friends to have a good time because we feel with the hard work we have done we deserve some down time, some fun. On our journey in life we may get married and begin our own family and we still don’t seem to have the time to be still and listen for the voice of God. As our children start school with continue to be over worked, and over committed with all the extra school activities, as well as the many things we committed to do within our own church. And through our lives we as Christians forgot an important step we learn in the beginning of our Christian walk, which can be found in the book of Psalm 46:10 (one of my favorites) ‘BE STILL, AND KNOW THAT I AM, GOD” We have forgotten what it means to be quiet long enough to hear the voice of God in our lives. How can we possibly know what God’s will is for our own lives if we don’t become quiet. As parents or not when we have something  important to say to someone we ask them to be quiet to listen, correct!. So why doesn’t God deserve the same thing from us, and that is to be still and quiet. In the book of Isaiah 11:6 a young child shall lead them, Samuel was a young boy when he first heard God calling him, speak Lord your servant is listening. We need to slow down in our lives and just listen, just as you would listen to the birds singing, children laughing, because when we do we can truly know what God, the creator of our universe just might be saying to us. Are you truly listening for the voice of God today?

You Are The Light

Matthew 5.pngYou are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone.                                 Matthew 5:14-15

Jesus expects His followers to be like him. The light that shines from a child of God is reflected light. Christ does not ask us to produce our own light. We must shine with the reflection of His light. It is light that is born from the presence of Christ in the believer’s heart. What does Jesus mean by this? Light can be seen. Before matches were made, lighting a lamp was a problem, so when people left their homes, they put it under a bowl so that it kept burning without being a danger. But the primary purpose of the light was to be seen. Likewise, Christianity is something that must be seen. Our Christianity must not only be visible in the church, but also in our daily life and activities. Light is a guide. Lights along the road warn us of cliffs and rock falls, along the seawall or breakwater lights warn us of the tide. Christians must show the right path to others by means of their examples and way of life. A light is often a warning to stop there is danger ahead. It is sometimes necessary for Christians to warn people of danger. Our warning should not be given in anger or irritation, or with criticism or judgement. With love, it will be effective. The light that can be seen, that serves as a guide; and that is a warning, this is the light Christ calls us to be.

The words of Martin Luther King Jr- Darkness, cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.

Treasures in Heaven

Matthew 6a.pngDo not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be. The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you us darkness, how great is that darkness! No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

Matthew 6:19-24

These words come to us from Jesus himself, and it reminds us what we should be focusing on everyday. Too many times we get caught up with making money, and more and more, why because we want the bigger homes, cars, fancy vacations and simply we just want to hold on to whatever we can. In the midst of it all we begin to worship an idol which is call the idol of money. Many might be saying is that so bad and my answer to you is yes it is. If you go back to the book of Exodus which is in the Old Testament in the twenty chapter the second commandment from God to his people which is you and me is this, You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. There is a difference in working to take care of yourself and support your family and becoming a workaholic, because everything you see, you what and you will do anything to get it. Jesus is telling his followers of then and us now that we need to first Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God and all these things shall be added unto you, it is also a children song that we teach the children in Sunday School or during Vacation Bible School.             Seek Ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Alleluia,  Ask, and it shall be given unto you, seek and ye shall find, knock and the door shall be opened unto you. Alleluia. We need to remind ourselves each day that God already knows what our needs are even our wants, however we need to seek him and trust he will take care of his children, that is what a parent lovely does for his children. Remember the more stuff that any of us have does not mean we will be happier when we get them. You are created in God’s imagine and we need to have a Walk with God to come to know and love him for who he is, and then we will come to have true happiness that money or stuff can not buy us.

Staying On The Right Path

Psalm 2.png

Your word is a lamp for my feet, and a light on my path. I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws. I have suffered much, preserve my life, Lord, according to your word. Accept, Lord the willing praise of my mouth and teach me your laws. Through I constantly take my life in my hands, I will not forget your law. The wicked have set a snare for me, but I have not strayed from your precepts. Your statues are my heritage forever, they are the joy of my heart. My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.                                    (Psalm 119:105-112)

There are times in our lives when life gets a little hard, well I mean down right difficult for us, and we feel and may say to God, I just can’t take another step, I just can’t go on! Do you ever feel this way, I know I do, and believe me too many times to count when I have felt that way.  However, over the years of my life I am learning to stay close to God, to stay on the right path in my own life. One of the ways in which I am able to stay on the right path is to continue to stay close to God by reading his word.  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  (Hebrews 12:2) I have made it a good habit to spend time alone with our Lord, I go to a quiet place where no one can found me and just read his word, reflect on the words that I just read, and then to apply them into my own life. I read the devotional Upper Room each and everyday, beside the scriptures they suggest to us the reader, I also found other scriptures to read, and their are times before I open up my own Bible I just ask God to share with me when I need to read and learn and then I just happen to open my bible to that scripture. My bible is becoming worn out, which to me it is saying that I am using it for guidance in my own life. I have highlight many scriptures both in the Old and New Testament that means something to me. I just open to James 1:17 which states Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights. Also Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Let me ask you something, if you own a car and never took it out of your garage would the battery died, I would say yes it would. If you never took care of your body with food, water and rest would eventually could you get sick, again I would say to you, most likely. So why then would you not take care of your spiritual body, because it too need to be feed, and not just once a week, just like out bodies need food to eat each and everyday so also our spiritual body needs food each and everyday of our lives. In order for us as human to stay on the right path in our lives with God, we also need to walk closely with him thru our prayers and with our studying of his word on a daily basis.
